We support organizations that are already trusted on the ground. We try to give them what is hardest to raise: unrestricted, multi-year support and the patience to keep doing the work.
We prefer specific programs, but we will fund capital projects when they make sense. We support U.S. 501(c)(3) organizations, and the international partners they vouch for. We do not accept unsolicited funding requests; our giving is initiated by the trustees.

We started this foundation because our mother, Salma Khatoon, taught us that giving was not a separate thing you did — it was simply how a life was arranged. Our faith asks for a portion of what we have, each year, to be returned to those who have less. That is where this began.
Over the years it has become something gentler than obligation. We give because we were asked to, and because we now want to. The two have stopped feeling different.
We try to keep the foundation small, to know our partners by name, and to stay out of their way. We hope this site is honest about that — and that it points, more than anything, toward the people doing the actual work.
